Local community groups and businesses will make donations to restock school's supply closet
DALLAS—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten will visit Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School on Tuesday to highlight the importance of building strong community partnerships to ensure that every neighborhood school is an excellent school. She will be joined by Dallas Independent School District Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa and community, business, union and school leaders.
After a tour of the Hawthorne Elementary campus, community and business groups will present donations to the school to replenish its supply closet with supplies for students and teachers as well as school uniforms. Union leaders hope this event will raise awareness and spur other community and business groups to get more involved in their neighborhood schools.
On Tuesday morning, prior to the Hawthorne event, reporters are invited to attend a parent forum at David W. Carter High School, 1819 W. Wheatland Road, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. The discussion will center on opportunities for parents to get involved in the schools.
"Top two public high schools in the country-School for the Talented and Gifted and School for Science and Engineering. Finding great schools is hard; finding our list's two top schools close together in the same building is beyond belief."
