DALLAS-University of Phoenix, the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Independent School District are officially launching Read. Play. Win! Literacy Program at an in-school pep rally 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 2, at Hector Garcia Middle School.
Read. Play. Win! is an innovative, research-driven program that uses incentives to encourage more than 157,000 pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students in Dallas ISD to read books. Prizes such as a personal note of congratulations from Jerry Jones, autographed Cowboys t-shirts, tours of the new stadium and laptops from University of Phoenix will be awarded for reading milestones. The student who reads the most books will star on a local Future Phoenix billboard as well as the web sites for the Dallas Cowboys, University of Phoenix and Dallas ISD.

WHY: Seventy-two percent of fourth grade students in Texas read below a proficient level, according to a 2009 report from the National Center for Education Statistics. Low reading proficiency affects student development and ultimately, adult behavior and future employment. To improve local literacy rates, University of Phoenix, the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Independent School District have partnered to launch the Read. Play. Win! Literacy program.
