Townview Students and Teachers Take Part in Student Exchange Program

DALLAS—Twenty students and two teachers from the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center will travel nearly 7,000 miles to South Korea as part of the international student exchange program which brought Korean students and teachers to Townview nearly two years ago. Parents, staff, friends and community members will gather at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Terminal D to give the group a fantastic send off at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, November 6.

The group will spend two weeks studying at the prestigious Bugil Academy in Cheonan, South Korea, approximately 60 miles south of Seoul. In preparation for their international educational experience, students have spent the last few months immersed in the South Korean culture.

"I have prepared for this experience by studying Korean culture, learning the Korean language and examining their educational system," said Cristian Martinez, a student at the School of Business and Management. "I am looking forward to meeting new people, trying new foods and experiencing a culture that is vastly different from my own."

In early 2009, 20 students and two teachers from Bugil Academy visited with Townview students and their families while studying at the Dallas ISD magnet center and learning about American culture. In addition to attending school at Townview, the students took time to visit the Dallas Museum of Art, the new Dallas Cowboys stadium and other attractions vital to the city of Dallas.

"The Townview Exchange Program is an opportunity for our students to become global learners, expand their knowledge and appreciation for different cultures, and make friends with students in other parts of the world," said Townview's Executive Principal Alice Black.

Two Townview teachers will accompany the students to Seoul and plan to make this a learning experience for the entire Townview student body.

"The students at Townview will be able to communicate with their classmates in South Korea via Skype," said Denise Foster, one of the Townview teachers traveling with the students. "This is an excellent opportunity for all students at Townview to ask questions via Skype and participate in a unique experience for Dallas ISD students."
