Dallas ISD Observes Black History Month

Celebrations include student performances, food gatherings, plays, and more
DALLAS–With the theme "African Americans and the Civil War", Dallas Independent School District students and staff will observe African American History Month during the month of February.
Schools have organized celebrations which include assemblies, student performances, food gatherings, writing projects, plays, and more.
Some of the events scheduled throughout the district include:
- John F. Peeler Elementary School, 810 S. Llewellyn Ave., will have student art work displayed at the cafeteria throughout February. The art work will honor the African American culture and leaders.
- Preston Hollow Elementary School, 6423 Walnut Hill Lane, will host a program featuring a student play at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 8.
- Students at William L. Cabell Elementary School, 12701 Templeton Trail, will participate in a program featuring African American songs, dances, and poetry. The program will take place at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15.
- A tribute to African Americans through dramatic art, songs, and dance is scheduled at 6 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 17, at Edward Titche Elementary School, 9560 Highfield Dr. The tribute will honor African American contributions to society and history.
- W.T. White High School, 4505 Ridgeside Dr., will host a program featuring the school's JROTC color guard, steppers, choir, dance company and poetry readings on Friday, Feb. 18, at 11:15 a.m.
- Students at John B. Hood Middle School will host an assembly highlighting the top five African Americans in several categories such as music, business, politics, sports, and scholars. The students will perform skits explaining the contributions of the chosen leaders. The school is located at 7625 Hume Dr.
- Sam Tasby Middle School, 7001 Fair Oaks Ave., will have their third annual Black History Month Community Brunch on Friday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m.
