Shavannia M. Dash to Lead New School in Addison; School Opens August 2011
DALLAS—Shavannia M. Dash, a 16-year veteran in education, has been named principal of Dallas ISD's new George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School opening August 2011 in Addison. The announcement was made by Dorothy Gomez, senior executive director of the Northwest Learning
Community.
Dash recently served as assistant principal at Dallas ISD's Charles Gill Elementary School and began her education career as a pre-kindergarten teacher in Louisiana in 1994. She has taught nearly every grade at the elementary level and served as a Reading First instructional coach. Dash also worked with gifted and talented students and in arts education.
"I believe in a 'children first' approach to education and believe all students can achieve their full potential, given meaningful opportunities to learn," said Dash. "I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to develop the curriculum in this new school and work with the Addison community to achieve excellence and equity for all students in our community."
Dash was chosen through a principal selection process involving parents, community leaders and member of the business community. According to Addison City Council Member Bianca Noble who spearheaded the community's coordination with Dallas ISD, the selection committee "was impressed with Mrs. Dash's enthusiasm, focus on instructional leadership and the action plans she presented."
Dash earned her undergraduate degree at Upper Iowa University and her master's degree in elementary education and administration from Texas A&M Commerce where she is pursuing a doctoral degree.
George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School will be located at 3939 Spring Valley Road and will accommodate 810 students in grades pre-k through 5.
