Dallas ISD Students Bust a Move With Thousands of Middle School Students Across the Country

2 May 2011

Students join nationwide movement to fight childhood obesity

DALLAS—Students at Thomas A. Edison Learning Center, 2940 Singleton Blvd., will take time to bust a move as part of the "Let's Move!" Flash Workout Event supported by First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative to curb childhood obesity. The flash event is a national effort involving thousands of middle school students across the country.</>

Tuesday, May 3, at 12:42 p.m., Central Time (1:42 p.m. Eastern Time, 11:42 a.m. Mountain Time), students nationwide will simultaneously perform a pre-choreographed dance and exercise routine to Beyonce's "Move Your Body." The Grammy Award winning superstar has re-written and re-recorded the lyrics to her chart-topping hit "Get Me Bodified," and produced a new dance/exercise video designed to get middle school students exercising and eating healthy. Students have been using an instructional practice video to learn the routine and prepare for the event.</>

While several Dallas ISD campuses will participate in the event, Edison has been selected as the official school site in the Dallas market and will be featured in a video with other official sites across the country.</>

Flash events, also known as flash mobs, are increasingly popular efforts to assemble a group of people in one place to participate in a brief performance of some kind. In this case, the nationwide group will all perform the same dance/exercise routine simultaneously. Organizers plan to share the video through social media.</>

Other Dallas ISD middle schools participating include: W.E. Greiner, T.W. Browne, Harry Stone Montessori, Boude Storey, E.D. Walker, Pearl C. Anderson, Maynard Jackson, Robert T. Hill, Seagoville Middle, D.A. Hulcy, E.B. Comstock, Dallas Environmental Science Academy, Sarah Zumwalt, J.L. Long, L.V. Stockard and T.C. Marsh.</>

The event is being organized by the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation.</>
