W.T. White High School Student Awarded Eric Louis Brown Scholarship

Student Will Receive $5,000 for College Expenses

DALLAS—Antonino Abundes, a W.T. White High School senior, has been awarded the 2011 Eric Louis Brown Memorial Scholarship for his outstanding academic and athletic achievements.</>

Abundes, a student athlete, is ranked 1st in his class of 475 and has shown a great commitment to helping others through the National Honor Society tutoring program.</>

He has received a number of awards and honors including: 2010-2011 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student, California Institute of Technology Young Engineers and Science Scholars Program, and Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State Football Team-1st Team, Class 5A.</>

Abundes is described by teachers and coaches as an accomplished athlete and student who is focused, intelligent and analytical. Abundes attributes much of his success to teamwork.</>

"I enjoy being part of a team and being able to share the accomplished feeling with my teammates," he said. "Teamwork is invaluable. It is because of the help of others that I have been able to do so much."</>

Abundes has been accepted to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The scholarship is named in honor of Eric Louis Brown, a dedicated athlete and beloved student at David W. Carter High School, who died following a football practice. Dallas ISD established the scholarship in his memory. Scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded annually for 10 years to a
district student who has demonstrated excellence in both academic and athletic pursuits. The first scholarship was awarded in 2008.</>
