18 Apr 2011

Schools are rehearsing songs created from poems leading up to final concert in May

DALLAS Students at Stephen C. Foster Elementary will rehearse songs created from student poems written for a Voices of Change program at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the school, 3700 Clover Lane.

Seven exemplary and recognized Dallas ISD schools with student populations considered underserved were chosen to participate: Julius Dorsey, T.G. Terry, John H. Reagan, J.J. Rhoads, Foster, L.L. Hotchkiss and Dan D. Rogers. Nearly 400 students from the seven schools are involved in the program. The final performance will bring them together at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at El Centro College, 801 Main St.

The poems were written using the theme, "My Neighborhood." Selected poems have been set to music by local composer and music teacher Mary Alice Rich. Find information on Voices of Change, a group of professional musicians and composers that promotes new music, at www.voicesofchange.org.</>
