Students Put Finishing Touches on Award-Winning Performance

W.H. Gaston Middle School Students Among 17 to Represent Dallas ISD at State Competition

DALLAS-- Students from W.H. Gaston Middle School are polishing up their award-winning performance as they prepare to compete in the Texas History Day Competition to be held May 5-7 at the University of Texas at Austin. The students placed 1st in the Junior Group Performance category during regional competition with their performance "The State of Being Free: The Dred Scott Debate." A total of seventeen middle and high school students will represent Dallas ISD in the state competition.</>

This year's theme is "Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences." Students present their work in original papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and through developing Web sites.</>

Students representing Dallas ISD are: Emma Maxwell, Junior Historical Paper category, Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School; Manuela Nava, Junior Individual Web Site category, Rangel; Kiara Simpson, Paul Jones, Alexis Louis and Dheryl Batts, Junior Group Performance category, W.H. Gaston Middle School; Will Wakefield, Junior Individual Documentary, Benjamin Franklin Middle School; Juan Rojas, Junior Individual Exhibit, Gaston; Marshall Honaker and Michael Wakefield, Junior Group Exhibit, Franklin; Jazmin Vazquez and Vanessa Lopez, Senior Group Web Site, Thomas Jefferson High School; Senior Group Performance: Manny Suarez, School of Health Professions and Briaunna Calico, Xavier Hernandez and Corina Martel, Judge Barefoot Sanders Magnet Center; Leslie Cooper, Senior Individual Documentary, Rosie Collins Sorrells School of Education.</>
