Teachers Recognized for Innovative Teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
DALLAS—Seven Dallas ISD teachers will be awarded $10,000 each by the Texas Instruments Foundations for their innovations in science, technology, engineering and math.
Representatives from the TI Foundation will join with Dallas ISD and the Dallas Education Foundation to officially announce the recipients of the 2011 Texas Instruments Foundation STEM Awards. The announcement will take place at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, in Room 105, Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave.
Seven educators will receive the award which recognizes teachers in grades six through 12 who use innovative methods to teach science, technology, engineering and math. Recipients of the awards are nominated by secondary principals for their efforts to enhance student achievement and increase interest in these subjects.
The 2011 TI Foundation Innovations in STEM Teaching Awards recipients are:
· Willy Flores, math, Hillcrest High School
· Jason Hogan, science, Sunset High School
· Toni Legg, science, Robert T. Hill Middle School
· John Long, science, Woodrow Wilson High School
· Bennett O'Connor, science, Trinidad "Trini" Garza Early College High School
· Jan Taylor, technology, Emmett J. Conrad High School
· Scheryl Woodard, technology, Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
"Congratulations to these highly skilled, talented teachers," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "These are the teachers who inspire students to develop a love for math, science, technology and engineering—all areas where we need more students pursuing careers. This is where it all starts with innovative teachers connecting with students, developing young minds to make a meaningful impact in these fields. We are grateful to the TI Foundation for recognizing these teachers for going that extra mile to inspire students.''
Each recipient will receive $10,000, of which $5,000 is directly awarded to the classroom teacher and the other $5,000 is to be used at the discretion of the teacher for professional development and/or instructional technology.
