Dallas ISD Board of Trustees Select Alan King to Serve as Interim Superintendent

6 Jun 2011

King Currently Serves As Chief Financial Officer

DALLAS-The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees tonight unanimously selected the district's Chief Financial Officer, Alan King, to serve as the district's interim superintendent.

King will serve at the will of the board until a search is conducted to permanently replace Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa, who submitted his resignation earlier today to take a similar position with Cobb County Schools in Georgia.

"While Alan has only been with the district since January, he has proven himself to be an effective leader," said Board President Lew Blackburn. "The board was able to build a consensus around his selection and we anticipate that he will provide positive direction to the school district while a search is conducted. It is a credit to the current team we have on staff in the school district that the board is confident in selecting an individual from within the organization."

King, who is a CPA, has 33 years of experience in school business management, most recently in Lewisville ISD. During the last few months, he has been instrumental in presenting various budget scenarios to the board and administration. The budget presentations persuaded the board to consider an early resignation incentive for employees, ultimately saving more than $50 million. At the same time, he created a citizens' budget review commission to examine how the district spends its finances.

"Quite obviously, I am humbled by the confidence shown by trustees," said King. "It will be a privilege to serve in the position of interim superintendent. My goal is to keep things running smoothly so that our schools are ready to welcome students on August 22."

Prior to joining Dallas ISD, King was the Deputy Superintendent in Lewisville ISD for 12 years and was responsible for all financial operations for the 50,000-student district. He served in similar positions for both the Goose Creek and Harlingen school districts. King also held the position of interim superintendent in Goose Creek ISD.

King's list of accomplishments include:

• Increased Lewisville ISD's fund balance from $16 million to $110 million.

• Thirty-two consecutive years of unqualified opinions on financial statements, all completed on time with no significant comments in management letters to the board.

• Successfully completed 32 school district budgets ranging from $40 million to $500 million.

• Awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International sixteen times.

• 2007 recipient of the International Eagle Award from ASBO International, the highest tribute that the organization bestows upon its members.

King will begin the interim position immediately. He informed the board that he would not accept a salary increase while serving as interim superintendent.
