The Dallas Independent School District Board of Education Trustees, in a budget session today at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, has requested the administration to provide a base salary of $28,500 for new teachers with a signing bonus of $1,500. This would bring the first year teacher compensation to a total of $30,000.

"Our goal is to make our teacher salaries competitive with our neighboring districts," said General Superintendent James H. Hughey. "We can never pay our teachers enough, but we think this is an excellent start to adequately compensating our teachers," he said.

Additionally, the Board requested the administration to develop a compensation package to provide experienced teachers a straight line increase with steps as well. Under the compensation package requested by the Board every teacher will receive at least a $1,000 raise during the next school year.

Although the budget will not receive final approval until the end of August, trustees have set their top priority as raising salaries for employees throughout the district, particularly teachers. Details of raises for other employees will be forthcoming during the budget process as more information regarding revenue becomes available.
