Free and Reduced Meals Available to Students

3 Aug 1999

Students enrolled in the Dallas Independent School District for the 1999-2000 school year may apply for free and reduced-price meals benefits. Although there was no increase in the price of breakfast, lunch prices will go up 10 cents in elementary schools and five cents in middle and high schools. Meal application forms will be given to each student on the opening day of school, along with a letter of explanation to parents or guardians.

Approximately 70 percent of district students participate in the free or reduced-price meals program. Families will be notified of the eligibility of their children once a meal application has been submitted. In some cases, households will receive letters stating their household is eligible for free meals based on "direct certification" from the state. These households do not have to complete a meal application for the 1999-2000 school year.

Students in grades PreK-12 may buy breakfast for 50 cents and "Type A" lunches will be $1. If students want to prepay their meals, the lunches will be sold at 90 cents for elementary and 95 cents for secondary students.

The "Type A" lunches consist of meat, two servings of fruit and/or vegetables, bread, and a half-pint of milk. Breakfast consists of meat or eggs, bread or cereal, a half-cup of fruit (fruit or vegetable juice) and a half-pint carton of milk.

Some students qualify for free or reduced-priced meals at public schools, and income guidelines are set by the federal government. Those students who qualify for reduced-priced meals will pay only 30 cents for breakfast, 40 cents for lunch, and 15 cents for after-school snack (approved after-school programs qualify for after-school snacks.)

Students from households whose income is at or below levels shown on the following scale are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. If the household's gross income is equal to or less than the figures in the income columns, the children in the household are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

There will be instances where foster children are eligible for the free or reduced-price meal benefits. Parents with problems or concerns about the free and reduced-price meal application or the result of verification of the income level, can discuss the matter with school district officials. Families also have a right to a fair hearing. This can be arranged by writing to the Executive Director, Food and Child Nutrition Services, 3700 Ross Avenue, School Box 56, Dallas Texas, 75204, or by calling the department at 214- 932-5500.

All meals will be served beginning the first day of classes Monday, August 16.
