Board Meets Aug. 26; Budget Adoption on Agenda

The first regularly-scheduled meeting of the Dallas school board is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, August 26, at the School Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave. Adoption of the proposed 1999-2000 general operating budget of $893,214,069 is expected. The recommended increase over last year's budget is $66,691,753.

The Dallas board consists of nine members elected by the citizens of Dallas County. Their tasks include setting policy, identifying needs of the district and establishing goals of the school system. The board recently adopted a five-year plan for success and a new mission statement. The district's mission is "to prepare all students to graduate with the skills to become productive and responsible citizens."

The board meets monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. except for November and December when the meetings are on the third Thursday. Standing committees of the board meet on the second Tuesday of the month. The Committee of the Whole meets the third Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Citizens are invited to attend all meetings of the board. Individuals who wish to address an issue at the monthly board meeting may register to do so prior to the meeting with the Office of the Executive Director of Board Services at (972) 925-3720 until 3 p.m. the day of the meeting. After 3 p.m., speaker cards may be given to the Executive Director of Board Services before the meeting begins. No cards will be accepted once the meeting begins.
