Area legislators, a psychiatrist, and a Justice of the Peace are among citizens to be honored by the Dallas Independent School District Youth and Family Educational Services Division on Thursday, May 18, at 9 a.m. The Division is hosting its first annual Recognition and Appreciation Breakfast at the Dallas Horticulture Center at Fair Park to salute the work of parents, schools, and community members in maximizing success for children.
State Senator Royce West, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and State Representative Dale Tillery will receive awards, along with Justice of the Peace Judge Thomas G. Jones and Dr. Michael Madigan. Dr. Madigan, a psychiatrist, volunteers his time in one of the district's nine Youth and Family Centers, which provide mental and physical health care and support services to children and families. Ruby Scott, a parent and member of the Advisory Council for DISD after school programs also will be recognized for service to the community.
Dance Troupes from Thomas Tolbert Elementary School, Rosemont Elementary School, and the Lincoln High School Jazz Band will perform at the breakfast, which is sponsored by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CLC) program. Currently 17 Dallas Independent School District sites operate after-school programs with 21st CLC grant funding.
Rosemont Elementary and Franklin Middle School will be recognized for exemplary after-school programs that extend learning opportunities into non-school hours. Others to be recognized include Casa View United Methodist Church, Dallas Parks and Recreation Department, and Educational Consultant Ruth Turner, who has worked with the district on special projects.
"We are pleased to be able to honor the many parents, community members and school staff who are helping us achieve the district's mission to prepare all students to graduate with the skills to become productive and responsible citizens," stated Dr. R. Mark Harris, Assistant Superintendent-Youth and Family Educational Services.
