Seven Dallas High Schools To Pioneer Computer Program In The Summer

22 May 2000

A new technology-based curriculum designed to help teachers better manage student performance and personalize learning will be pioneered at seven DISD schools this summer. The Compass Curriculum Manager offers a non-traditional, technology-based, alternative to regular classroom instruction which includes the integration of Internet sites, thematic assignments and student achievement and assessment reports. In addition, in-home computers, provided by Don Williams, CEO of Trammel Crow, Inc., will be made available to students enrolled in the summer sessions of the program.

"One of the unique aspects of the Compass Curriculum Manager system is that it provides a valid, individualized learning plan for each student," said Ruben Bohuchot, Chief Technology Officer—Dallas Independent School District. "Results are customized and help coordinate the regular academic program with enrichment activities and curriculum."

Compass Curriculum Manager will be implemented at Amelia Earhart Learning Center, Pearl C. Anderson Middle Learning Center, Thomas A. Edison Learning Center, Moises Molina High School, James Madison High School, L. G. Pinkston High School, and H. Grady Spruce Reconnection Center to be used during the summer school session.

Program effectiveness among summer school students will be measured with the use of an on-line battery of TAAS, SAT and/or DISD-created exams which will determine successful completion of a course or grade level. Targeted students in the identified sites will be tested with the on-line version of the grade/subject level test at the summer school program.
