City's Summer Food Program Kick-Off Is June 6

1 Jun 2000

The kick-off of the 2000 Summer Food Service Program in Dallas will be held at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Kidd Springs Park, 711 West Canty. The program's goal is to ensure the youth of Dallas will not go without proper nutrition during the summer months. Prizes will be presented to the first 100 children to attend the event.

In addition to DISD representatives, partnering agencies including the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department, Greater Dallas Community of Churches, Boys and Girls Club, Dallas Housing Authority, YMCA and Girls Incorporated are scheduled to attend the event.

The lunch distribution program at city parks begins June 5 and ends July 21. Citizens, age one to 18, qualify to receive free lunches and snacks. District campuses offering summer school will begin serving lunches on June 6 and continue through July 20. The DISD prepares the meals for program participants.

"The Summer Food Program, however, does more than provide nutritious meals to needy children. It provides a safe and enriching environment for children to learn during the summer," said Sonjia Kinsey, specialist, DISD Food & Child Nutrition Services. More than 60 percent of the summer food sites combine meal time with other activities such as reading enrichment and sports.

Information on programs, including Summer Reading and Send-A-Kid-To-Camp, will be available at the kick-off event. For more information, call Food & Child Nutrition Services, (214) 932-5554.
