Important Upcoming Dates and Information

The Dallas Independent School District central offices will be closed for summer break July 3-14. Operations will resume Monday, July 17.

In addition, please note that summer school graduation will be held Tuesday, July 18, at 2:30 p.m., Loos Fieldhouse, 3815 Spring Valley Rd. Approximately 300 high school students are expected to graduate. Board President Roxan Staff will present the diplomas.

First Day of Classes for Year-Round and Traditional Calendar Schools

Classes for the district's year-round schools Gabe P. Allen, Bowie, Cochran, Foster, Reagan, Reinhardt and Rogers begin Monday, July 31.

The first day of classes for students enrolled in schools which follow the traditional calendar is August 14.

Documents Needed for Local Campus Enrollment:

One of the following documents is needed to enroll in a Dallas public school:

@ Birth certificate, Baptism certificate, Passport or Hospital certificate.

Prekindergarten Enrollment Requirements:

Listed is information regarding back-to-school health requirements for the 2000-2001 school year. For more information regarding immunizations, check with your school nurse.

To be eligible for enrollment in the pre-kindergarten program, a child must be at least four years of age on or before September 1 of the current school year and meet the following criteria:

@ Unable to speak and comprehend the English language; or

@ Come from a family whose income, according to standards set by the State Board of Education is at or below the subsistence level established by the State of Texas and according to federal guidelines.

@ Eligible for homeless services.

Immunization Requirements:

Dallas Independent School District students entering kindergarten will be required to complete a series of vaccinations. The district is following guidelines established by the Texas Department of Health which requires that students enrolling in the district for the first time provide evidence of required immunization. Listed are requirements for the 2000-2001 school year:

Diphtheria-Tetanusfour doses of the vaccine with one since the fourth birthday.

Poliomyelitis (to age 18)three doses of the vaccine with one since the fourth birthday.

Rubella (Measles)(August 1997) Students born on or after September 2, 1991; two doses of the vaccine or serologic confirmation of measles immunity. The first doses must be received on or after the first birthday. The second doses must be received at least 30 days after the first doses. Students born prior to September 2, 1991, first dose of measles vaccine since first birthday, a second dose of measles vaccine by age 12 years.

Rubella (German Measles)One dose since the first birthday or serologic confirmation of immunity.

MumpsOne dose since the first birthday or serologic confirmation of immunity.

Haemophilus Influenza Type B (Hib)Students 15 months of age through 4 years one dose of Haemophilus type b since 15 months of age, or a series of four doses before 15 months of age. Serologic confirmation of Hib immunity is acceptable in lieu of immunization dates.

Hepatitis B(August 1, 1998), Students born on or after September 2, 1992 three doses required.

VaricellaEffective August 1, 2000, children and students attending school will be required to be vaccinated against varicella (chickenpox) as follows: Children born on or after September 2, 1994 who are 1-year-old or older will be required to have received 1 dose of varicella vaccine or to present documentation of previous varicella illness. Children born between September 2, 1988 and September 1, 1994 (inclusive) must show proof by 30 days after their 12th birthday or either having received 1 dose of varicella vaccine or of having previously had varicella illness.

A delay in school enrollment may be necessary if the student has not started or has not continued to receive vaccine doses as they become due. All immunization records must be validated by physician's signature or health clinic stamp. The month, day, and year must be indicated on the record for each new immunization.

Note: Exemptions from immunization requirements may be granted on a medical or religious basis. An application for exemption signed by the physician or head of church must be submitted in writing to the school principal.
