As the nation's eleventh largest school district, Dallas Independent School District serves more than 160,000 students who come from homes where 58 different languages are spoken. Operating with a $1 billion dollar budget, DISD employs 18,613 employees including 10,000 teachers in 220 schools Taste Of DISD2 Aug 2000 Dallas Independent School District kitchen supervisors will find out what's new on the school lunch menu at “Taste of DISD” scheduled from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at W. H. Atwell Middle School, 1303 Reynoldston Lane. Sponsored by the DISD Food & Child Nutrition Services Department, the tasting and training seminar showcases new food items that schoolchildren said they would enjoy eating, Dennis Barrett said. “Students look at the menu selection just like consumers,” said Barrett, DISD executive director–Food & Child Nutrition Services. “When they have lunch at school, they want to have food choices that are different from what they eat at home.” The new menu items were selected from a focus group that was comprised of elementary and secondary schoolchildren. District menu specialist Janet Curda said students starting school Aug. 14 will be in for a treat with a range of tasty new food items to enjoy. “We hope they think the new menu is delicious and nutritious,” Curda said. A few of the new items joining the menu of pizza and hamburgers are: a deli turkey sandwich prepared on fresh baked submarine roll; egg rolls served on a bed of oriental rice; fajita-flavored chicken breast; and shrimp poppers. Booths will be setup at “Taste of DISD” for employees to sample the food items. “We want our kitchen supervisors to be aware of the new menu items and how to prepare them before the start of school,” Barrett said.
