Trustees To Adopt 2000-01 Budget and Tax Rate at First Meeting of School Year

Adopting the proposed general operating budget and increasing the tax rate will be the focus of trustees at the first regularly-scheduled meeting of the Dallas school board. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the School Administration Building Auditorium, 3700 Ross Avenue.

The trustees expect to adopt the proposed 2000-01 budget of $928,867,730, which includes a recommended increase over last year's budget of $32,167,730. The major focus of the proposed budget is campus-based allocations and programs. The budget features a $28,201,218 compensation package for teachers, principals, assistant principals, deans and campus professional support staff.

Board president Roxan Staff encourages the community to attend the monthly board meetings which are open to the public.

“The meetings give the public the opportunity to see how government works,” she said. “By attending the meetings the public begins to understand the complexity of the school board agendas and the many issues the trustees deal with every day.”

The board meets monthly on the fourth Thursday at 6 p.m. except for the Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and March 29 meetings. Standing committees of the board meet on the second Tuesday of the month. The Committee of the Whole meets the third Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Citizens are invited to attend all meetings of the board. Individuals who wish to address an issue at the monthly board meeting may register to do so prior to the meeting with the office of the executive director of board services at (972) 925-3720 until 3 p.m. the day of the meeting.

After 3 p.m., speaker cards may be given to the executive director of board services before the meeting begins. No cards are accepted after the meeting starts.
