17 Aug 2000

The Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Teacher Appreciation Reception and Tour for new teachers in the Dallas Independent School District to welcome them to the city's diverse culture.

The reception begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Dallas Horticulture Center, 3601 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The center is located on the Fair Park grounds. During the three hour reception, teachers will be entertained by one of DISD's high school jazz bands. Food, door prizes and information will be provided by the chamber.

For new teachers interested in sight-seeing, a tour starts at 5 p.m. Designed to educate the teachers about Dallas' African-American history and resources, the tour includes the Juanita Craft House and Freedman's Memorial Cemetery. By visiting locations such as the African-American Museum, Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Saint Paul United Methodist Church and Dallas Education Center, the chamber hopes to acquaint the new teachers with the resources available to them to teach Dallas schoolchildren.

More than 200 teachers already have signed up to attend the reception and tour. For more information, contact the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce at (214) 421-5200.
