DISD Health Fair Community To Benefit From Family & Health First

27 Sep 2000

Dallas Independent School District invites the community to attend the Third Annual Family & Health First health fair scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Thomas Jefferson High School, 4001 Walnut Hill Lane.

Sponsored by Family & Health First Healthcare Foundation Inc., the health fair is one of the most beneficial services offered through the district, said Ruth Wilson, principal of Thomas Jefferson High School. “The health fair provides access to needed health services to the entire community, not just those parents who have students in DISD,” she added. “It is an opportunity for people who may not have access to these services to take advantage of free screenings and other health services.”

Free immunizations will be offered at the health fair including flu shots and pneumonia vaccines. Other free health services include glucose and cholesterol screening; blood pressure check; cataract and glaucoma screening; prostate cancer screening; and pap test and clinical breast exam. The Cancer Prevention Program of Parkland Health & Hospital and YWCA will offer mammograms at no cost.

Tulsa Firefighters Educational Clowns will have two shows at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The themes of the shows are Fire Safety, Safe Kids and Say No To Drugs. Balloon art, children's face painting, refreshments and Mariachis are some of the activities planned for the health fair that attracted more than 3,500 people last year.

For some screenings pre-scheduled appointments are required. For an appointment or general health fair information, call (214) 981-9200.
