DISD Selected As One Of 10 Sites In The Nationwide Lights On Afterschool Project

Dallas is one of 10 cities nationwide participating in the Lights On Afterschool Project. The Thursday, October 12, observance calls for the participation of school and city leaders in the event in an effort to highlight the importance of quality afterschool programs.

Thomas Tolbert Elementary School will be the showcase site in Dallas and will feature an agenda which includes student performances, music and art demonstrations, and food. Tolbert is a 21st Century Community Learning Center site operated in collaboration with ArtsPartners of Dallas.

The event's theme, Six Flags of Texas—Texas History Through the Arts, will feature an open house for parents and community starting at 3:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy a snack hour at 5 p.m. From 5:30 p.m., to 6:30 p.m. beginning with the presentation of a proclamation by the City of Dallas, a performance featuring each afterschool activity will take place. DISD Board Trustee Hollis Brashear, as well as district and city officials, will be present.

Lights On Afterschool Project is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a national agency, and JC Penney, and co-hosted by the National Community Education Association.

All seventeen 21st Century Community Learning Center programs in DISD have been invited to organize school-community events which highlight the variety of activities offered to children enrolled in the program.
