Funds For Technology Awarded To Dallas Independent School District

3 Oct 2000

The State of Texas has made grant funds available to ensure that students continue to have access to technology. Twenty campuses in the Dallas Independent School District have been awarded $50,000 each by the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) Board for technology advancement. District students will be introduced to multimedia technology and high-speed Internet access in classrooms and in libraries so that technology will not be an intimidating obstacle, but rather, it will be the median through which work, play, research, and tasks are made easier and performed more efficiently.

The Non-Competitive Grant for Texas Public Schools was designed to allow public schools to apply for funds to advance technology for all schools. The $1,000,000 grant, which officially begins October 2 and will be administered by the Technology Services Department, will fund up-to-date multimedia technology and Internet access in classrooms and school libraries.

DISD schools selected to receive technology equipment are:

Bayles, John Carpenter, Central, George Bannerman Dealey, Everette Lee DeGolyer, L.O. Donald, Paul L. Dunbar, Lida Hooe, L.L. Hotchkiss, Stonewall Jackson, Albert S. Johnston, Lisbon, Mount Auburn, K.B. Polk, Preston Hollow, Joseph J. Rhoads, Seagoville, Harry Stone, Daniel Webster, Sudie L. Williams

“Our goal is to provide Dallas students the most advanced technology available,” said Interim Superintendent Robert Payton. “We appreciate the additional support granted to us by the TIF Board and the State of Texas, and have no doubt these funds will benefit education in Dallas for years to come.

Since its creation by the 74th Legislature in 1995, TIF has awarded approximately $487 million in telecommunications infrastructure grants to its four constituents--public schools, libraries, institutions of higher education, and public, not-for-profit healthcare facilities. The TIF board receives approximately $150 million per year in revenues from telecommunications assessments to disburse in the state of Texas over a ten-year period. To date, the DISD has received $3,423,886 to enhance technology in 44 schools.
