As the nation's eleventh largest school district, Dallas Independent School District serves more than 160,000 students who come from homes where 58 different languages are spoken. Dallas Students Take An Active Role On Texas Walk To School Day, October 42 Oct 2000 Dallas Independent School District students will be among the participants in the International Walk Our Children to School Day, Wednesday, October 4. The event calls for children, parents and community to walk to school together with the purpose of promoting safety, health, physical activity and concern for the environment. Several Dallas schools have planned activities for the day. • At Kimball High School, Assistant Principal Nikeesia Ranson and uniformed members of student organizations, including the baseball team and the cheerleaders, will walk students from Thomas Tolbert Elementary School home. The students will meet at 2:45 p.m. in front of Tolbert which is located at 4000 Blue Ridge Road. In addition, at 3 p.m., physical education classes will walk their local school neighborhood checking for unsafe areas in regular routes used by students. The students will meet at Kimball's gym and will be led by school community liaison Rai Malone. Kimball is located 3606 S. Westmoreland Rd. • Students, parents and staff at Arlington Park Elementary School will meet at the Arlington Park Recreation Center on Record Crossing at 7:30 a.m. to walk to school. Students will be encouraged to use safety rules and to identify any dangers along the way. Dallas Police Officer Flynn Coon will be on hand to escort the walkers. Upon arrival at the school, the walkers will enjoy a breakfast of fresh fruit and juice. Arlington Park Elementary is at 5606 Wayside Dr. • Physical education classes at Harrell Budd Elementary School, 2121 S. Marsalis Ave., will talk about safe school routes and hold discussions about problems students have experienced in walking to and from school. Part of the classroom discussions include reviewing safety rules such as never walk alone, walk in groups of two or more, and never talk to strangers. Class discussions will be held throughout the day during physical education periods.
