Community Professionals Tutor DISD Students In Math

Dallas Independent School District students who need a little extra help understanding their math assignments can get that assistance at Saturday tutorials. Sponsored by the National Society of Black Engineers, students in grades 5-12 are eligible to take advantage of tutorials from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 346 of the DISD Administration Building, 3700 Ross Avenue.

The Saturday tutorial dates are: Oct. 7 & 28; Nov. 4, 11 & 18; Dec. 2, 9 & 16; Jan. 13, 20 & 27; Feb. 3, 10, 17 & 24; March 3, 10, 24 & 31; April 7, 21 & 28; and May 5 & 12.

To help students develop a positive attitude about mathematics and spawn more success in the classroom, the free tutorial program will partner students with community professionals from engineering, computer science, mathematics and teaching fields.

These math tutorials are one way a group of engineers and other professionals give back to the community, said Sharon McLaughlin of the Dallas Alliance of Minority Engineers.

“We are able to give the students one-on-one assistance that is sometimes not available in the classroom,” she said. “By going off-line with students individually, we are able to deal with individual problems they are having with math.”

Students need to bring homework, extra-credit assignments, study material, textbook, pencils, paper, calculators and any other items necessary to complete their math assignments.
