Dallas Stars Foundation Promotes Reading in the Dallas Independent School District

Three Dallas Stars players won't be playing hockey for children when they visit a DISD elementary school to kickoff a reading incentive program, Stick With Reading. The program spokesman Blake Sloan along with teammates Ted Donato and Marty Turco will read some of their favorite children's stories to students from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Sidney Lanier Center for Expressive Arts, located at 1400 Walmsley.

At the kickoff, the hockey players will be joined by Robert Cooter, DISD associate superintendent–Dallas Reading Plan. Other participants in the kickoff include W. H. Adamson cheerleaders and Sidney Lanier drum corps and spirit group.

Started by the Dallas Stars Foundation in 1998, Stick With Reading is designed to promote and develop healthy reading habits by children across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The program requires students to keep a time log of the books and magazines they read over a six-week period. Students who log the most hours reading will be rewarded for their dedication and accomplishment. The program ends Nov. 17.

More than 60 DISD schools are participating in this reading program which is supported by Lucent Technologies, Half Price Books, Pizza Hut and UPS. The sponsors along with the Dallas Stars Foundation say they can make a difference with the reading incentive program by helping children develop the skills necessary for them to lead quality and well-educated lives.
