Walnut Hill Elementary Receives National School Of Character Award

Walnut Hill Elementary School has been selected as one of 10 finalists to receive the 2000 Schools of Character Award. The award is sponsored by the Character Education Partnership (CEP) and the Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character (CAEC) at Boston University.

The CEP will recognize this year's National Schools of Character award winners at their National Forum in Philadelphia, PA, October 19-21. At the event, Walnut Hill principal Jo Anne Hughes will receive a National Schools of Character Flag and $2,000 to further character education efforts at the school. An awards presentation will be held October 19-21 at the Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel.

As a national winner, Walnut Hill Elementary School serves as a model of effective character education for other schools, both locally and nationally, and the staff serves as ambassadors in this effort, said CEP executive director Esther F. Schaeffer.

Walnut Hill Elementary School, a Dallas Independent School District Blue Ribbon School, has been selected a Texas Mentor School in the Texas Mentor School Network. The campuses chosen came from a highly competitive group and were selected through an extensive application process and data review. Designation as mentor school allows a campus the opportunity to share their successes with other schools and to provide leadership in implementing the kind of campus-based initiatives that have resulted in improved student performance.
