Dallas Independent School District Trustee Hollis Brashear was recently awarded the 2000 Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. The award was presented October 6 at the Dallas Convention Center and recognizes individuals who have made significant volunteer contributions to the civic enhancement of Dallas' African American community.

Brashear represents District 6 (Southwest Dallas) on the school board. He was first elected in 1992 and re-elected in 1993, 1996 and 1999 and served as board vice president from 1994 to 1997. He was elected president from December 1998 to June 1999. Brashear's military and civilian engineering career spans 43 years. During his 21 years as an officer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he served as troop commander, staff officer and other engineering and construction management positions.

"I am most proud of my service as president and member of the DISD Board of Education," said Brashear. "During my term as president, the board and administration developed a five-year-plan for improving teaching and learning in the district. I am proud of the programmatic structural changes that are made in the delivery of math instruction. Kindergarten though third grade teacher development is the cornerstone to improving math achievement for African American students."

A graduate of Lincoln High School, Brashear received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Prairie View A & M University and a master's degree in the same field from Oklahoma State University. In addition to his membership in the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, Brashear is an elder at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship.
