The Dallas Independent School District has had a banner year in recruiting qualified educators to teach in the district's 220 elementary, middle and high schools, said Hector Flores, DISD director–Recruitment and Retention.
"This has been one of our better years for teacher hiring," he said. "But in order to meet staffing needs of our schools, we have to continue an aggressive recruitment and retention campaign. The dramatic growth of our student enrollment is placing the district on a full court press to respond."
The district is still looking to hire more educators to join its teaching staff. The last job recruitment fair of the year to try to fill the approximately 150 teaching vacancies is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at César Chávez Learning Center, 1710 North Carroll.
At the job fair, candidates must go through a screening phase before they are granted an interview with the campus principals. The screening process is from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Prospective applicants must have a minimum bachelor's degree with a 2.5 grade point average. Job fair participants should bring references, transcripts and teaching certificate or college letter of recommendation for certification.
After the screening phase, applicants who qualify will be interviewed by school principals. The interview phase is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
With competitive salary packages, the average based teacher salary is at least $45,400. Beginning teachers salary starts at $33,000.
Principals are looking for teachers in all areas. However, the district continues to offer special incentives to teachers who hold certificates in early childhood (PK-K), math, bilingual education, Spanish, science and special education. The incentives include a stipend ranging from $500 to $3,000 depending on the teaching area.
Some of the specific teaching vacancies are: one AEP teacher, five art teachers, 35 bilingual teachers in PreK-6, two computer teachers, two dance teachers, 20 elementary teachers, three English teachers, nine ESL teachers, four secondary ESOL teachers, one fine arts teacher, three economics teachers, one journalism teacher, seven kinder/Pre-kinder teachers, one media specialist, 15 math teachers, 12 music teachers, one PE teacher, four reading teachers, one ROTC teacher, four science teachers, seven social studies teachers, one social studies/soccer teacher, four Spanish teachers, one speech teacher, five TAG teachers, one TESL teacher and three vocational teachers.
