As the nation's eleventh largest school district, Dallas Independent School District serves more than 160,000 students who come from homes where 58 different languages are spoken. Operating with a $1 billion dollar budget, DISD employs 18,613 employees including 10,000 teachers in 220 schools.

The Greater Dallas Crime Commission, along with local police departments, rewarded area youth with $100 and $500 savings bonds for their outstanding involvement in the Cruisin' in the Right Lane program. The program enhance police-youth relations and recognizes outstanding young people for their actions to better themselves, their family and the community.
Dallas Independent School District students who were nominated for the award are: Whitney Cameron and Adolphus Noel Jr., R. L. Thornton Elementary; LeOndria Morgan, Harry Stone Montessori Academy; Kalana Thompson, Umprey Lee Elementary; and Allison White, Herbert Marcus Elementary. Steadman Dobbins, Arlington Park Elementary was among the winners.
