16 Jan 2001

For this school year, the Dallas Independent School District has hired approximately 1,575 new teachers to join its teaching force; however the district still has 180 teaching vacancies. To fill these positions, the Dallas Independent School District has scheduled a job recruitment fair from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at A. Maceo Smith High School, 3030 Stag Road. During a critical teacher shortage that is prevalent on a national level, it is not unusual for districts to still have vacancies, said Diane Miles, DISD executive director–Human Resources Professional and Support Staffing.

"The district continues to seek full-time teachers for the vacancies we have," she said. "We continue to recruit, interview and hire throughout the year. It is an ongoing process in this district." With competitive salary packages, the salary range for teachers starts at $33,000 and goes to $57,821.

The district offers a $1,000 new hire incentive that will be paid to a limited number of fully certified teachers. This incentive is possible under a size reduction grant. Also, the district continues to offer special incentives to teachers who hold certificates in early childhood (PK-K), math, bilingual education, Spanish, science and special education. The incentives include a stipend ranging from $500 to $3,000, depending on the teaching area.

At the job fair, candidates must go through a screening phase before they are granted an interview with the campus principals. The screening process is from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Prospective applicants must have a minimum bachelor's degree with a 2.5 grade point average. Job fair participants should bring references, transcripts and teaching certificate or college letter of recommendation for certification.

After the screening phase, applicants who qualify will be interviewed by school principals. The interview phase is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Some of the specific teaching vacancies are: one AEP teacher, five art teachers, 35 bilingual teachers in PreK-6, two computer teachers, two dance teachers, 20 elementary teachers, three English teachers, nine ESL teachers, four secondary ESOL teachers, one fine arts teacher, three economics teachers, one journalism teacher, seven kinder/Pre-kinder teachers, one media specialist, 15 math teachers, 12 music teachers, one PE teacher, four reading teachers, one ROTC teacher, four science teachers, seven social studies teachers, one social studies/soccer teacher, four Spanish teachers, one speech teacher, five TAG teachers and three vocational teachers.

Prospective candidates who cannot attend the upcoming job fair should mail copies of their resume, transcripts, college letter of intent or certification to DISD–HF, 3807 Ross Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75204 or fax (972) 925-4300.
