Eighth graders interesting in the health professions are invited to attend a Health Extravaganza from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, 1201 East 8th Street. (MapscoŽ key 55B) Sponsored by the advisory board of the School of Health Professions, the fair is designed to introduce schoolchildren and their parents to the magnet high school's programs.
Representatives from the medical, dental and veterinary fields and other Dallas health agencies will provide students with information and insight about their respective professions, said Myrtle Walker, principal of the School of Health Professions. There will be ambulances and a CareFlight helicopter available at the event as well.
Throughout the day, students will be able to attend various sessions. Some of the topics include food and nutrition; physical therapy; prosthetics and orthotics; psychiatry and child life; dental medicine; and veterinary medicine. The Health Extravaganza is to encourage students to attend the School of Health Professions which is rated exemplary by the Texas Education Agency.
"Our programs give students who have a passion for the health professions a head start," Walker said. "After students complete some of our programs, they have the background and are eligible to seek certification so that they can be employed in certain health occupations."
