DISD Schools Revisit the Contributions of African Americans to Society

From elementary to high schools, students across the Dallas Independent School District will pause to celebrate the history and unique contributions of African Americans. In recognition of African-American Heritage Month, the celebrations vary from dance festivals to parades and from exhibits to fashion shows.

The diversity of activities represents the many areas African Americans have contributed to the larger society, said Clarence Glover, DISD executive director–Multicultural Education. He added that some of the activities will showcase the authors, scientists, educators, activists, artists, dancers, politicians and community leaders who have left an imprint on the legacy of America.

"These activities supplement the curriculum by exposing all students to the rich contributions made by African Americans to our multicultural society," Glover said. "The activities during February are designed to tell the story and journey of African Americans in the development of America."

At Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary, the month-long activities include a display of miniature African-American inventions; special guest speakers including Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk and Chief of Police Terrell Bolton; and an African-American Heritage luncheon with oratorical performance for parents. The school is located at 5640 S. Marsalis. (MapscoŽ key 65N)

For the students at Hillcrest High, an international night, called Celebrating Our Diversity, is planned from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8. The "evening of excellence" will include a 50 country flag processional, multicultural performances and ethnic foods. The school is located at 9924 Hillcrest Road. (MapscoŽ 25M)

With a Showtime at Edison theme, the students at Thomas A. Edison Learning Center will participate in writing contests, movie days and an Artist Hall of Fame. The school is located at 2940 Singleton Blvd. (Mapsco key 43Q)

The national theme for African-American Month is Creating and Defining the African-American Community: Family, Church, Politics and Culture.
