Gala Benefits Dallas' Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts
A Celebration of Diversity is a gala that not only honors and recognizes the diverse people who have made an achievement in the visual and performing arts, but it also benefits the future generation of artists: students at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
Actor and dancer Gregory Hines and visual artist Christian Schumann, a graduate of Booker T. Washington, will be honored at the event for their contributions in their respective professions. The evening's activities will begin at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Lakewood Theatre, located at 1825 Abrams. (Mapsco key 36Y)
In honor of the celebration, Mayor Ron Kirk has proclaimed Feb. 8 as "Diversity Day." The evening's activities begins with Hines and Schumann's induction into the "Dallas Entertainers Walk of Fame." They will place their handprints in the "Walk of Fame" that is located outside the theatre. Invited guests will get to view the Texas premiere of the Showtime Original Picture Bojangles, starring Hines as the legendary tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
AT&T Broadband and Showtime Networks are the underwriting sponsors. Proceeds from sponsors and the silent auction held during the evening's activities will be presented to Booker T. Washington scholarship fund to help nurture future Dallas entertainers. With an enrollment of 700 students, the DISD magnet school provides a well-rounded education for exceptional students with talent in dance, music, theater or visual arts.
