DISD Offers Course To Teach Workplace English To Adults
After discovering that some applicants applying for job opportunities with the Dallas Independent School District could not speak English well enough to even fill out an application, the Human Resource Services office joined with Adult Basic Education and Dropout Prevention departments to offer a 45-hour free intensive English course.
The course focuses on language skills needed in the workplace. The English for Employment course starts March 19. The class will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Barbara M. Manns High School, 912 S. Ervay. (Mapsco® key 45Q)
By offering the course, the district hopes to teach adults how to fill out applications and communicate with employers and co-workers, said Rosalinda Boland, DISD executive director–Adult Basic Education. She added that by successfully completing the English for Employment course, these adults will have greater opportunities in applying and acquiring jobs with businesses throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
"The class provides the necessary skills for employment," she said. "It will assist these adults who are not proficient in English to become productive citizens in our society."
Students who successfully complete the 45-hour course will receive a certificate. Completion of this class does not guarantee anyone a job with the DISD. Registration is limited to 30 students. To register for the English for Employment class, contact Araceli Casa at (972) 925-4222 or visit DISD Human Resource Services office, 3807 Ross Avenue. (Mapsco® key 45H)
