As the nation's eleventh largest school district, Dallas Independent School District serves more than 160,000 students who come from homes where 58 different languages are spoken. Operating with a $1 billion dollar budget, DISD employs 18,613 employees including 10,000 teachers in 220 schools.

The candidate filing period opens Feb. 19 for three Dallas Independent School District board trustee districts. Candidates interested in running for Districts 5, 7 and 8 must meet the filing deadline set for 5 p.m., March 21. The election day is set for May 5 with early voting from April 18 to May 1.
The board trustee in District 5 represents East Oak Cliff and West Dallas; District 7 trustee represents Central Oak Cliff and West Dallas; and board trustee in District 8 represents West and Near North Dallas. All of the Dallas board trustees are elected from single-member districts to serve rotating, three-year terms of office. The DISD board members are charged with hiring the superintendent, approving the annual budget, adopting policy and evaluating district performance.
To qualify, a candidate must (1) reside in Texas at least 12 months prior to the day of election, (2) reside in the Dallas Independent School District for at least six months prior to the day of the election, (3) reside in the trustee district for six months prior to the election day, (4) be a registered voter, and (6) be at least 18 years of age.
Dallas board candidates and interested citizens can learn more about the requirements of school board service at a candidate workshop from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Region 10 Education Service Center in Richardson, 400 East Spring Valley Road. ( Mapsco key 17L)
At the workshop, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards, experienced school board members will explain key responsibilities for the post and outline the qualifications necessary for effective service. Topics to be covered also include important ethnical practices during board services, how board members are accountable for the education of students and keys to responsible campaigns.
