Students at L. O. Donald Elementary School took fund raising seriously when they learned their contribution could help their brothers and sisters pursue a college career. Their fund raising efforts yielded $2,000 which will be donated to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund at a presentation Friday, February 16, at 2 p.m. in the school auditorium. L. O. Donald Elementary is located at 1218 Phinney Ave. (Mapsco key 53U)
"Our students felt their contributions could help their siblings and friends make it to college," said school principal Jorge Castaneda. L. O. Donald Elementary is a feeder school to Adamson, Molina and Sunset high schools. He added that the penny drive turned into a dime and quarter collection until the goal was met. "The effort is even more significant considering that the majority of students in the school come from families with modest incomes."
Teachers and staff also joined in by contributing an additional $1,000 to the fund for a total of $3,000.
To reward the students' dedication and selflessness, a pizza party has been planned. Half of the pizzas will be donated by Domino's, a school partner.
