WHAT: In an effort to reach male youth in the community and provide them viable resources for success in life and parenting, the Health Education Program of the Dallas Independent School District will host a conference on male responsibility for men, 18 and older.
"We anticipate that the Conference on Male Responsibility will become an annual event. Our goal is to provide valuable resources, information and support to men in the area of fatherhood and family wellness," said Dr. Allen Sullivan, Assistant Superintendent, Dallas Independent School District.
Keynote speaker Ronald Johnson, the founder of the 10-Step Rites of Passage Program, which develops skills required to achieve manhood, will speak about male responsibility. Johnson, the product of the public school system, former gang member and graduate of Columbia University, has worked with at-risk youth throughout his career.
Father's Role as an Educator; Father/Child Bonding; Building Skills for Fathers; Father Absence and Crime, and Abstinence: Not a Dirty Word are among the workshop topics. In addition, participants will be able to take advantage of cholesterol and blood pressure screenings and prostate screenings.
WHEN: Saturday, March 24, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Townview Magnet Center, 1201 E. Eighth St. The conference is free; breakfast and lunch will be provided. Spanish speaking interpreters will be available at the site.
The conference is sponsored by the Health Education Program of the DISD and the Texas Department of Health. Health screening will be provided by the Methodist Hospital of Dallas Prostate Screening and Awareness Program. For more information, call 214-932-5137.
