11 Candidates File For 3 Board of Trustee Seats

The filing period for the Dallas Independent School District Board ends with eleven candidates vying for the three trustee seats. The candidates will be running for Districts 5, 7 and 8. The board trustee in District 5 represents East Oak Cliff and West Dallas; District 7 trustee represents Central Oak Cliff and West Dallas; and the board trustee in District 8 represents West and Near North Dallas.

In District 5, incumbent Se-Gwen Tyler will face Llewellyn Blackburn, an educator; Ruth Houston, a personnel assistant; Yul Lynch, self employed photographer; and Thomas Wattley Jr., president and CEO of his own company. The five candidates competing for District 7 are Rafael Anchia, an attorney; John Gibson, an attorney; Ramiro Lopez Jr., an assistant director; Louis Trujillo, owner of a tax and financial service; and Robert Werner, an investigator. Incumbent Jose Plata is not seeking reelection in that district. In District 8, incumbent Kathleen Leos is unopposed in her reelection bid.

The election day is set for May 5 with early voting from April 18 to May 1. All of the Dallas board trustees are elected from single-member districts to serve rotating, three-year terms of office. The DISD board members are charged with hiring the superintendent, approving the annual budget, adopting policy and evaluating district performance.
