Graduating seniors are invited to attend the School-To-Work Job Fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 7, at Union Station, located at 400 S. Houston Street. (MapscoŽ key 45P) Sponsored by the Graduate Placement Center, the job fair is designed to prepare seniors for the workplace, said Barbara Biebuyck, Job Placement Specialist for the Dallas Independent School District.
"The job fair is the Graduate Placement Center's school-to-work effort. It provides seniors with a jump-start to obtain entry level jobs for full or part-time employment after high school graduation," Biebuyck (Bee-Buck) said.
Starting at 9 a.m., several seminars are planned to give students tips and strategies to help their quest for employment. The seminar topics include: Resume Writing, Interviewing Techniques, Networking, Dressing for Success and Financial Planning.
Biebuyck expects at least 1,000 graduating seniors to attend the job fair where approximately 100 local companies will be on hand to take applications and interview prospective employees. Businesses are still welcomed to participate in the job fair by contacting Biebuyck at (972) 749-2580. Along with the businesses, community colleges, universities and technical schools will have booths set up to promote higher education.
The Graduate Placement Center plans to announce the recipients of three $1,000 scholarships at the School-to-Work Job Fair. The scholarships are sponsored by Pro-Staff Personnel Services and the Graduate Placement Center Job Bank members.
A computer will be given to the Dallas public school that has the greatest percentage of seniors in attendance. American Airlines Travel Academy has donated a pair of round-trip tickets as a door prize. Also, Pro-Staff Personnel Services has donated $750 worth of door prizes for incentives for seniors to attend.
This is the seventh year the School-to-Work Job Fair for graduating seniors has been organized by the DISD Graduate Placement Center. The corporate sponsors are Pro-Staff Personnel Services, Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy and the Hyatt Regency Dallas.
The center offers a variety of job search assistance to DISD graduates. Biebuyck says that nine out of 10 graduates who come into the center for help get hired. Some of the free services provided by the center include resume preparation, career guidance, ongoing job search assistance and interviewing skills coaching.
The Graduate Placement Center is located at 5000 South Malcolm X Boulevard in Room 112. (MapscoŽ 56D) For information about the School-to-Work Job Fair or the Graduate Placement Center, contact Barbara Biebuyck (Bie-Buck) at (972) 749-2580.
