College Station School Superintendent To Join DISD's Team

General Superintendent Mike Moses announced today that Jimmy V. Scales Sr. has joined the senior management team of the Dallas Independent School District as deputy superintendent. Currently the superintendent of College Station Independent School District, Dr. Scales will begin his duties this summer.

"We are pleased to have another Texas sitting superintendent to join our district," Dr. Moses said. "Jim has been an outstanding area superintendent in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a successful Texas superintendent. He has done an excellent job in the area of student performance in College Station."

Dr. Scales came to College Station ISD in 1994 from Tulsa, Oklahoma Among his accomplishments, Scales is credited with being a strong force behind the approval of two bond issues that funded the renovation of older schools, the construction of new ones and many technology updates. He also supported initiatives that give teachers grants for innovative programs, the improvement of career and technology programs and promoted advanced course offerings. The student population at College Station ISD is approximately 7,300.

While serving as principal of Millwood Senior High School in Oklahoma City in 1977-1985, Millwood received the 1984 Exemplary Schools Award from the United States Department of Education.

Scales holds a Doctorate of Philosophy degree from the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and both a Master's and a Bachelor's degree from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.

His educational career spans 35 years, and includes a teacher/coach position at Dunbar High School/Okmulgee High School in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, 1966-1971.

Scales held numerous positions in Oklahoma City including head football coach/athletic director at Northeast High School, 1971-1974; assistant high school principal at John Marshall High School, 1974-1977; and high school principal at Millwood Public Schools, 1977-1985. He served as interim superintendent of the Millwood Public Schools from July 1982 to December 1982, and from February 1984 to June 1984.

Scales accepted the position of high school principal with the Tulsa Public Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma, July 1985-June 1990. In 1990, he was named Area II Superintendent, a position he held until 1994.

Several of his current professional affiliations include member of the Board of Directors, Lone Star Investment Pool, member of the Committee to Revise Educators' Code of Ethics and Standard Practices, member of the Advisory Committee for Texas A&M Administrator's Institute, and member of the Texas Superintendent's Committee to Revise Superintendent's Standards for the State of Texas. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors for the College Station ISD Education Foundation.

Throughout his career, Scales has been recognized with the Grand Prix Award presented by the Retired Teachers of Texas (1997); the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Lincoln former Students Association, College Station; and many other civic and professional awards.
