DISD Names Teacher Of The Year Finalists

Four finalists for DISD Teacher of the Year for 2001-2002 were named May 7 at the district's ice cream social. A committee of judges selected the four from more than 125 teachers of the year who submitted essay packets outlining their teaching philosophy, professional background and record of community involvement. The social was sponsored by C-H-2-M Hill, an environmental engineering firm, and WIN First Dallas. The Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Dallas-Fort Worth awarded each of the finalists a check for $1,000.

Teacher of the Year finalists:

Roseanne Burzynski, is a mathematics teacher at Moises Molina High School. She has been in her present position for four years and has 12 years of teaching experience.

Linda Gail Coleman, is a reading and language arts teacher at Sequoyah Learning Center. She has been in her present position for two years and has 16 years of teaching experience.

Deborah Jean Duke, is a kindergarten teacher at Robert Cook Buckner Elementary School. She has been in her present position for 21 years and has 25 years of teaching experience.

Dora Karim-Silat, is a science teacher at the School of Science and Engineering at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. She has taught there for four years and has 18 years of teaching experience.

The teacher of the year winner will be named at a banquet on Monday, Sept. 17.
