11 May 2001

Approximately 6,170 students are less than a month away from becoming graduates of the Dallas Independent School District. When these seniors entered the first grade in the 1989-90 school year, they became known as the Class of 2001. Those then first graders have journeyed from elementary to middle school to high school to reach this stage of their life: graduation.

By completing the academic requirements to qualify to graduate from DISD, these seniors now have a solid foundation as they begin to pursue other life goals, Mike Moses, general superintendent, said. "A community event, the graduation ceremony is a time to celebrate for parents, teachers and students," he added. "Though the celebration is centered around the single accomplishment of graduation, individuals in our community will have their own reasons to celebrate. For students, the walk across the graduation stage is a celebration of the completion of a life chapter devoted to learning to count, read and write. For the district, our graduation ceremonies are celebrations of appreciation of dedicated graduates and all of the community stakeholders who supported and encouraged the Class of 2001."

The district has 29 graduation ceremonies scheduled. The Class of 2001 at Justin Kimball High School will be the first ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Loos Fieldhouse (3815 Spring Valley). Sunset High School has scheduled the last graduation ceremony for the district at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, also at Loos Fieldhouse.

With more than 750 students set to graduate, Skyline High School will have the largest graduating class in DISD. A high school within a college, Middle College has DISD's smallest graduating class with 27 seniors.
