As the nation's eleventh largest school district, Dallas Independent School District serves more than 160,000 students who come from homes where 58 different languages are spoken. Operating with a $1 billion dollar budget, DISD employs 18,613 employees including 10,000 teachers in 220 schools.

Representatives from the Task Force on Alcohol Related Businesses Near Schools will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Pearl C. Anderson Learning Center, 3400 Garden Lane, to discuss the status and the progress of issues pertaining alcohol-related businesses. State Representative Helen Giddings and Councilman Leo Chaney Jr. will discuss the areas of economic development and code enforcement in the South Dallas/Fair Park area. (A press conference is scheduled for 9:45 a.m., followed by a tour of the neighborhood).
In the 1995 session of the Texas Legislature, Representative Giddings successfully shepherded efforts designed to lessen the effects of alcohol-related establishments near schools. She also has been directing her efforts toward other quality of life issues for the South Dallas/Fair Park areas.
