Preliminary figures indicate that the DISD Class of 2001 graduates will be attending college with the help of $37,563,060 in scholarship awards. This is almost $5 million more than the graduating class last year received. This year approximately 5,789 seniors graduated from the district's 29 high schools.
With a graduating class of 36 seniors, the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center School for the Talented and Gifted received the highest monetary scholarship award, totaling $8,523,152. The senior class at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts received the second highest monetary award where 163 graduating students have garnered $4,944,230 in scholarships. Also among the most sought-after graduates are the students at Hillcrest High School. With a graduating class of 249, the seniors received $2,087,560 in scholarships.
DISD had nine other schools where students were offered scholarships in excess of a million dollars. Those high schools are Skyline Center ($2 million); David W. Carter High School ($1,687,304); W. T. White High School ($1,501,809); Woodrow Wilson High School ($1,431,480); Lincoln Humanities/Communications Magnet School ($1,318,411); North Dallas High School ($1,250,000); Yvonne A. Ewell Magnet Center for Public Services: Government, Law and Enforcement ($1,200,000); South Oak Cliff High School ($1,199,258); and Franklin D. Roosevelt High School ($1,020,159).
