Thelma Lott Jones, principal of Everette DeGolyer Elementary School, was named Outstanding DISD principal for 2000-2001 at a recent luncheon sponsored by MetLife Resources. Jones was chosen from among principals selected from Areas 1-9 in the school district's outstanding principal competition this school year.
The luncheon was held at Lakewood Country Club and was attended by more than 125 principals and administrators. Ms. Jones also was selected as the most outstanding principal of Area 7. The program recognizes administrators for excellence in leadership, management, relationships and community/parent involvement.
A total of 51 principals were nominated for the recognition this school year. Of those, one principal was selected to represent the area in which their school is located. Outstanding area principals are:
Area 1 - Zulema Murillo, Julius Dorsey Elementary School
Area 2 - Halice Furtado, Daniel"Chappie" James Learning Center
Area 3 - Nancy McLaughlin, Woodrow Wilson High School
Area 4 - Robert Craft, W. H. Atwell Fundamental Academy
Area 5 - Lincoln Butler, Albert Sidney Johnston Elementary School
Area 6 - Sylvia Lopez, Raúl Quintanilla MiddleSchool
Area 7 - Thelma Jones, Everette DeGolyer Elementary School
Area 8 - Johnlyn Mitchell, Benjamin Franklin Middle School
Area 9 - Alice Wilson, Ewell D. Walker High School
The winning principals received plaques, pen sets and desk clocks. MetLife awarded Ms. Jones two round-trip airline tickets to any United States destination.
The luncheon was held as the culminating event of the For Principals Only Program, sponsored by DISD corporate partner, MetLife Resources, to identify and reward outstanding principals. Principals are nominated for the award by area superintendents, PTA presidents, leaders of site-based decision-making councils, fellow principals and leaders of community organizations.
