LULAC-SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIP FUND RAISING EVENT TO BENEFIT DALLAS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS

Scholarship Winners To Meet Top DISD Administrators

Twelve Dallas Independent School District graduates and their families will meet Deputy Superintendent Hector Montenegro and Associate Superintendent Ora Lee Watson who will present to them scholarships on behalf of LULAC Council 100. The presentation will be held at

9 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, at the Annette Strauss/Artist Square in downtown Dallas.

For the past six years, the League of United Latin American Citizens, Council 100 has joined Rincon Communications in sponsoring the Wednesday Nite Tejano Concerts at Artist Square. During the months of June and July, nine concerts have been held attracting almost 5,000 persons on a weekly basis. The approximately $6,000 in earnings LULAC Council 100 members have received through "sweat equity" has been donated for education scholarships to DISD students. Greyhound also contributed to the scholarship fund.

Each year, LULAC solicits and reviews student applications for twelve to fifteen scholarships of $500 each. Students selected for these academic merit and need scholarships are from area high schools.

Scholarship recipients and the high schools they attended in the 2000-2001 school year are: Maria G. Asencio, Adamson High School; Vanessa E. Caceres, Molina High School; Blanca Cantu, Skyline High School; Diana M. Lincon, North Dallas High School; Elizabeth Puga, Molina High School; Laura Martinez, Sunset High School; Maria del Pilar Rendon, Roosevelt High School; Elaina M. Rodriguez, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts; Roberto D. Rodriguez, Sunset High School; Lucy Torres, Yvonne Ewell Townview Center; Vanessa Vega, Sunset High School; Karla M. Vargas, Skyline High School.

Council 100 members of the scholarship committee are Joe Campos, Hector Flores, Jim Salinas, Rene Martinez, Michael Montoya, Mary Davila, Jim Walker, Rene Ronquillo, and Robert Cabello.
